Railways Of Belgium & Luxembourg DVD
Railways Of Belgium & Luxembourg
If Germany is the heart of Europe then Belgium could be said to be its political and social pulse. One of Europe's greatest international railway crossroads is in the capital city of Brussels but Ostend, Namur and Liege are also great railway centers. Although the country is relatively flat, in the east it has marvellous scenery and the west is extremely hilly.
From a railway point of view, Belgium has everything from branch lines with locomotive hauled trains to international expresses from all over Europe (and the East). Significant remnants of its once vast Vicinal meter gauge system still exists along the coast and around Charleroi. Double deck commuter trains serve the main population while 40 year old diesel railcars ply the secondary cross country lines. Passenger and freight trains are hauled by a wide variety of locomotives from the ultra-modern to venerable machines of the fifties and sixties.
Luxembourg is just under 51 miles long and around 35 1/2 miles wide. The national railway system of just 168 miles is tiny. However, Luxembourg is strategically located and is a major railway center. It's given the full treatment in this program.
