Stacks & Semaphores
Southern Pacific, now Union Pacific's main line between Tucumcari, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas is home to one of the biggest concentrations of Style B lower quadrant semaphore signals left in the country. We searched out these fascinating relics in December, 1996, capturing most of them on videotape. These signals are at least sixty years old, and will most likely fall victim to Union Pacific modernization in 1997, but for the moment, at the end of their long lives they still stand sentinel on the New Mexico sagebrush, clanking up and down with the passage of trains. There are several sets of blades in the area around Coyote, Carrizozo, and Polly, so come with us and take a fond look at these fascinating relics as they guard the passage of trains through the New Mexico sagebrush.
From the filmmaker, "SP's, now UP's Tucumcari line, one of the few places left that you can find any concentration of Style B lower quadrant semaphore signals. I concentrated on the area around Coyote, Carrizozo, and Polly, where most of the signals are, catching them going up and down. This was taken just after the merger, there is not too much sign of UP yet. One of my Favorites."
