Steaming Through the Deep South DVD

Travel through the south in the early 60s and discover some of the last steam operating in the United States. Rail photographer Mac Owen captured seven operations including the Reader Railroad when it was still a steam powered common carrier.

Owen discovered some unusual steam engines featured in this film: a wood-burning 2-6-2; a "fireless cooker" at the North American Rayon Company; and an old Southern Pacific engine working for a gravel company. On the affectionately-named "Tweetsie" railroad in Tennessee, the ex-Southern RR number #630 was hard at work moving freight. This engine still steams in excursion service today! Ingenuity and grit kept these steam locomotives working long after main line steam retired.
