    Travel back to the late 1940’s through 1958 to see Union Pacific Steam in action in regular service. Through the 16mm films of Shelby Cambell we enjoy seldom seen footage on the Kansas Division around Topeka, and on the Marysville Cutoff. After steam was gone in 1955 from the Kansas Division, the photographer shot on the Nebraska Subdivision in eastern Nebraska at places like Grand Island, Columbus, and other locations.

    On the Kansas Division we see the giant and rare 3-cylinder 4-12-2 engines of the 9000 series in action on the Marysville Cutoff. These were the largest 3-cylinder engines in the United States. We also see a wide variety of 4-8-2’s, 4-8-4’s and 4-6-2’s in passenger service on the local passenger trains, as well as 1955 troop trains which were long trains of Pullman cars hauled by a 4-8-2 or 4-8-4's. Many of these trains are shown west of Topeka as they ran from Ft. Riley to Kansas City. High-stepping 4-6-2’s are seen on trains 39, 40, and 69 regularly, and we see a few 2-8-0’s in switching service, as well as 2-8-2’s in local freight service.

    In Nebraska we are treated to 1956-1958 action with 4-8-4’s and 3800 series 4-6-6-4 "Challengers" dominating the mainline freight duties. 4-8-4’s were already bumped from passenger service for the most part. In addition we see 2-8-0 action on the Ord Branch from Grand Island, as well as 2 more 2-8-0’s on the Albion and Spalding branches from Columbus. These are all mixed freight/passenger runs. In addition we see some switching duties with 0-6-0's 4442, and 4446 at Grand Island. 4446 is notable since it went on to operate on the tracks of the Sacramento Railroad Museum in California.

    There is loads of great trackside action and historical steam locomotives plus trains that have now faded into history.

    Bonus footage shows the Eisenhower and Abilene segment and the tie-in to engine 7029. There is also a Music Video with the vintage footage, as well as 20 minutes of bonus contemporary Union Pacific action with 0-6-0 4466 at Sacramento, and shots of 844 and 3985 over the years with live audio. Vintage material is 85% color. Music and narration only, as no train sounds exist with these rare 16mm films.
